Kinky Twists aftercare (Hair not included): first 48 hours and weekly maintenance
By African Hair Braiding by Hawa | October 8, 2026
I do Kinky Twists (Hair not included) here in Silver Spring, and the biggest rule right after your appointment is simple: keep your twists as dry and hands-off as possible for the first 48 hours. No washing, no soaking, no heavy oils. Give the twists time to set so they stay neat longer and you do not fight frizz right away.
Kinky twists are meant to feel easy. But “low-maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance, ” especially in the Mid-Atlantic where summer humidity and winter dryness can both make twists puff up fast. I’ve been braiding in the DMV for a long time, and I’ve seen the same pattern over and over: the people who keep their twists neat for weeks are the ones who keep product light, protect at night, and clean the scalp gently on a schedule. If you’re commuting through Downtown Silver Spring, grabbing dinner in City Center, or running around with kids, this guide is built for real life.
Quick reminder: This service is listed as Hair not included. Some services include hair and some don’t, so it’s always smart to confirm during booking if you want me to supply hair.
First 48 hours: the 5 rules that keep Kinky Twists neat
Right after install, your twists are at their freshest. This is also when they’re easiest to disturb. Here’s what I recommend during those first two days.
1) Skip water, steam, and sweaty workouts
No washing and no heavy wetting for 48 hours. If you can, hold off on steam rooms, sauna sessions, and intense cardio too. Moisture swells the hair and invites frizz before the twist pattern settles.
2) Keep styling simple and low-tension
Avoid tight ponytails, slick high buns, and anything that pulls at your hairline. A loose low ponytail, a loose bun, or letting them hang is usually best at the start.
3) Protect at night, even if you “don’t move”
Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf. If you hate bonnets, a satin pillowcase is still better than cotton. Friction is the fastest way to get fuzz at the crown.
4) Moisturize the scalp lightly, not the twists heavily
If your scalp feels dry, use a light water-based scalp mist once or twice in those first 48 hours. Go easy. Heavy oils and thick creams can cause buildup fast, and buildup is what leads to itching for a lot of people.
If you feel pain: soreness can happen, but sharp pain, burning, or a stressed hairline is not something to push through. Let me know right away. I’d rather check the tension early than have you uncomfortable for days.
Week 1 and 2: frizz control that works in Mid-Atlantic humidity
After the first couple of days, your job is to keep your scalp comfortable and your twists looking intentional. In Silver Spring summers, humidity makes twists expand. In fall and winter, indoor heat can dry your scalp out. The routine stays pretty simple, but the “how much product” changes by season.
A commuter-friendly routine (5 minutes, 2 times a week)
- Mist your scalp lightly with a water-based spray (think light, not greasy).
- Seal just a little with a light oil on fingertips, focusing on parts and the perimeter.
- Smooth frizz with your palms, not your nails. Don’t rake through the twists.
- At night, put twists in a loose pineapple or two chunky sections, then bonnet or scarf.
What to avoid in the first week
Try not to load the scalp with edge control, heavy pomades, or thick butters. Those products can look nice for a day, then they trap sweat and lint. And if you’re walking around Downtown Silver Spring, hopping Metro, or running errands in City Center, your hair is picking up humidity and friction all day. Keeping product light helps your twists stay cleaner and smoother.
Washing Kinky Twists without ruining them (yes, you can wash)
A clean scalp helps your twists last. The trick is gentle cleansing, not a full soak-and-scrub like loose natural hair.
How I recommend cleansing
- Use a diluted shampoo or a gentle cleanser in an applicator bottle.
- Apply to the scalp and parts, then massage with the pads of your fingers.
- Rinse in one direction. Don’t pile twists on top of your head and scrub.
- Squeeze out water with a towel. Let them air dry fully, or use a hooded dryer if you have access.
Swimming note: Chlorine and salt water can rough up the hair and leave a film. If you swim, keep twists up, rinse as soon as you can, and focus cleanser on the scalp after. Dry your twists fully the same day.

Products that won’t cause buildup (and what to do for itching)
If you remember one thing: buildup causes more problems than dryness. Most itching after twists comes from product sitting on the scalp, sweat trapped at the roots, or irritation from not drying well after cleansing.
What usually works best
- Water-based scalp mist: light hydration without greasing up the parts.
- Light oil (sparingly): a few drops on fingertips for the scalp and a touch on ends.
- Anti-frizz control: a light foam or mousse can help flyaways without the heavy residue.
If your scalp itches
First, don’t scratch with nails. That’s how irritation turns into flakes and sore spots. Instead, wipe your parts with a damp cloth, then apply a very light scalp mist. If the itch shows up right after a heavy product, do a gentle scalp cleanse sooner rather than later and make sure everything dries fully. If your scalp feels tight or painful, I want to know. A quick check can save your edges.
When to reach out for a tension check or early touch-up in Silver Spring
I’m big on comfort and consistency. People come to me because they don’t want drama with timing or pricing, and they want to be treated like a person. I keep appointments moving and I don’t overbook, so if you need help after your install, you can actually get seen.

Reach out within the first two weeks if you notice scalp pain, bumps, or stress around the hairline. If a few twists loosen early, I’d rather tighten them before they start catching frizz and unraveling. And if you’re coming through Downtown Silver Spring for an AFI Silver outing or a walk on Sligo Creek, it’s easy to pair a quick check with the rest of your day.
Need help with your twists this week?
Call me or send a message and tell me what you’re feeling (tightness, itching, frizz, loosening). If you’re in Takoma Park, Wheaton, Kensington, Bethesda, Hyattsville, or Chevy Chase and commuting through downtown Silver Spring, I’ll help you keep your style looking fresh without adding a complicated routine.
