Passion Twists (Hair Not Included) Aftercare: 48‑Hour & Weekly Care image

If you just got Passion Twists (Hair Not Included) in Silver Spring, your most important rule is simple: keep them dry and low-manipulation for the first 48 hours. That means no steamy showers without covering your hair, no tight ponytails, and no constant pulling the twists forward and back. I install Passion Twists as a protective style, and the first two days are when slippage and frizz usually start if you treat them like they’re already “settled.” Give your twists a calm start, and they tend to stay neat longer.

Quick reminder: Passion Twists are a “Hair Not Included” service. You usually bring the hair for this style, so if you’re booking and you’re unsure what to purchase, ask me during booking so you don’t guess.

Your first 48 hours: the small rules that stop slippage

The day you leave my chair, the goal is to let the base of each twist set. In Downtown Silver Spring, humidity and surprise rain can sneak up fast, so think ahead before you step out. If it’s damp outside, cover your hair for your commute.

48-hour checklist: Keep twists dry, skip tight styles, don’t scratch with nails, and limit how often you’re separating or re-parting sections.

Sleep setup (this is where frizz starts)

Use a satin bonnet or scarf the first night, and keep it going. If you prefer a satin pillowcase, that works too, but a bonnet usually does a better job of keeping the twists from rubbing. I also like a loose pineapple with a soft scrunchie if your twists are long enough. Keep it loose. Tension at the hairline right after install is where people start feeling irritation.

Scalp care in the first two days

If your scalp feels dry, use a light oil sparingly. Jojoba or argan are good examples because they tend to sit clean and don’t feel heavy. Put a little on your fingertips, touch the scalp in sections, then stop. Drenching the scalp can lead to buildup quickly, and buildup is one of the fastest paths to itching.

Days 3–7 in Silver Spring: sweat, rain, and product buildup

After the first couple days, you can start living normally again, but I want you to be realistic about moisture. A packed Metro commute, a quick run, or getting caught in rain can leave twists damp at the base. That is when frizz and odor show up if the hair stays wet too long.

When you can wash (and how)

I generally recommend waiting 7 to 14 days before a full wash. When you do wash, dilute a sulfate-free shampoo with water so it spreads without you scrubbing hard. Focus on the scalp. Let the suds run down the twists instead of roughing up the twist length.

Drying matters: Make sure twists dry all the way through. Pat with a towel, then air-dry fully. If you go to bed with damp twists, that moisture can sit at the base and start causing problems.

If you get caught in rain or sweat a lot

Rinse with water if you need to, pat dry, and apply a tiny bit of light oil to the scalp afterward. Keep the twists as undisturbed as possible while they’re drying. If you’re going out around Downtown Silver Spring after an AFI Silver outing and you want to refresh fast, a scarf on the commute home helps reduce friction and frizz.

The weekly routine that keeps Passion Twists neat (without gunk)

Passion twists stay pretty when they’re moisturized lightly and kept clean at the scalp. Heavy products feel comforting at first, but they usually turn into buildup that makes twists look dull and start frizzing faster.

Moisturize 2–3 times a week, not 2–3 times a day

A light leave-in spray or a water-based braid spray is usually enough. Then seal with a small amount of jojoba or argan oil if you need it. If your scalp is sensitive, less product tends to feel better.

Scalp cleanse between washes

If you’re not ready for a full wash, use a witch hazel-free scalp cleanser or micellar scalp product on a cotton pad and wipe gently between parts. No aggressive scrubbing. You’re lifting sweat and product film, not trying to strip your hair.

And please don’t forget the basics: keep your hands out of your hair. Constant twisting, separating, and pulling at the roots can make even the neatest install look older fast.

If you’re still deciding on this style, I wrote a separate post on the benefits of Passion Twists for low-maintenance wear. It helps you pick the right length and lifestyle match before you sit down.

When to text me: normal tightness vs something I should fix

A little tenderness the first day can happen, especially if you’re not used to protective styles. What I don’t want you to push through is sharp pain, bumps that feel inflamed, or twists that are clearly slipping at the root within the first week.

That’s how I run things here. If something feels off, reach out sooner, not later. I’d rather help you correct a small issue than have you struggle through weeks of discomfort.

Local note: If you’re coming in from Takoma Park, Wheaton, Kensington, Bethesda, Hyattsville, or Chevy Chase and you need a quick check-in, tell me what you’re noticing and how long it’s been happening. I’ll guide you to the simplest next step.

Need pricing and timing for the install? Passion Twists (Hair Not Included) are booked at 240 minutes and $200. I’ll also confirm what hair to bring when you book so you feel prepared.
